Getting There

Air

It is about 15 minutes to Myitkyina airport from the town centre, and a taxi should cost no more than K5000; a tuk-tuk will be slightly less.

Bus

There are daily buses to Mandalay, Yangon, Hopin (for Indawgyi Lake) and Katha. However, journey times are long and the buses are basic – most people prefer to fly or take the train.

Train

There are several daily trains to Mandalay (21 hours), Hopin (for Indawgyi Lake) (4 hours, K1,750 Upper Class) and Naba (for Katha) (8 hours). There are ‘Express’ and ‘Slow’ trains. All rail journeys along this route are slow and bumpy – make sure to take the express!

Boat

There are boats to Bhamo, Katha and Mandalay; some cargo boats accommodate passengers in private sleeping berths.

These journeys can be a beautiful and relaxing way to travel, but journey times are very long (taking many days, and over a week to Mandalay) and from December to June services can be affected by low water levels.

It is not currently permitted for foreigners to travel from Myitkyina by boat.
