Southern Myanmar And The Irrawaddy Delta

Whether it is a short trip from Yangon to the Irrawaddy (Ayarwaddy) Delta towns of Pathein or Bogale, or an epic adventure through the scenic Tanintharyi (Tenasserim) Hills stretching south from the old colonial capital of Mawlamyine of Mon State towards Dawei and Kawthaung, southern Myanmar offers plenty for the intrepid traveler.

But the single most famous and popular destination in the area is the revered Golden Rock that sits atop the dramatic Mount Kyaiktiyo; the area to its south remains little visited by foreigners, much of it only having been recently made accessible.

When travelling in these parts of Myanmar, bear in mind that the further south you go, the more limited infrastructure becomes and over land access can get trickier (although there are regular flights from Yangon to the larger towns).
